Hey there, photography enthusiasts! Welcome to a special episode of The Photography Junkie hosted by yours truly, Jay. Today, we’re diving into a topic that’s close to my heart: nurturing mental health and overcoming self-doubt in the journey of an artist. It’s a journey filled with ups and downs, but we’re here to explore it together.

Before we jump right into the discussion, let’s take a moment to acknowledge the importance of addressing mental health issues. Trust me, folks, keeping those issues suppressed is like having a poisonous force lurking within you. It can really debilitate you in more ways than one. So, remember, seek help when needed, whether it’s through professional assistance or screaming into the forest—whatever floats your boat. I’m even embarking on my own healing journey, sharing my experiences with a trusted individual, and taking you all along for the ride.

Now, let me introduce our amazing guest for this episode—Kelly Reed. She’s a yogic mentor and self-care specialist who stumbled upon yoga accidentally while pursuing her career as a lounge singer. With 14 years of teaching experience and 500 hours of certification under her belt, she’s helped countless individuals find solace and healing through yoga. Her emphasis on providing a non-judgmental space and combating loneliness really struck a chord with me.

We artists, Kelly and I, have something in common: self-doubt and imposter syndrome. It’s like an unwanted companion that follows us around, questioning our worth. Kelly shares a pivotal moment in her career when she was booed off stage in Blackpool. It was a tough pill to swallow, and it took days of crying and seeking support to bounce back. Anxiety, low self-esteem, and neglecting self-care played their part in her struggles.

My journey has had its fair share of setbacks too. I organized a big event once, put in a whole year of effort, and guess what? It had a meager turnout. Talk about a blow to the ego! But you know what? Kelly and I both realized that feeling rejected and questioning our worth is something many artists experience.

Kelly sheds light on combating imposter syndrome by questioning the validity of negative thoughts. She suggests meditation, self-care practices, and spending time in nature to quiet that inner critic. One technique she recommends is keeping a journal to remind ourselves of past achievements and how we overcame challenges. It’s all about reminding ourselves of our capabilities, folks!

I really resonated with Kelly’s approach, and I couldn’t help but share my own self-care routine. Gratitude practice, Wim Hof breathing, meditation, exercise, singing, and list-making—yeah, it takes about an hour, but even 15 minutes of dedicated self-care can make a world of difference. Kelly fully supports this notion, encouraging everyone to tailor self-care practices to fit their schedules and make them a regular part of their lives.

To wrap it all up, self-care and nurturing our mental health are absolutely vital in overcoming self-doubt and imposter syndrome. Through self-reflection, questioning negative thoughts, and implementing self-care practices, we artists can cultivate resilience and regain confidence in our abilities. Remember, folks, you’re not alone in this journey. Kelly and I have been there, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.
